We have arrived to Cairns. To be able to describe how far we are from Sydney it was 3 hours, which is like travelling from Edinburgh to Barcelona. I have (here as well) the strange feeling that the city is empty. Although 160 000 people is living here. Probably the truth is that the locals are not walking around the city in the hottest time of the day and the tourists are at the Great Barrier Reef. 😊
Phill did the same, he went to a diving liveaboard for two and a half days and I started to explore Cairns on my own. Before we came away from Sydney we got a bit frightened, that we are not coming in the right time of the year. Why? - we asked. Because it is hot (33 degree) and the season of the deadly box jellyfish. Well the warm we can handle, because so far it was not cold at all and Phill tried to calm me down regarding the jellyfish that everything will be alright (wearing stinger suit).
I think both of us needed this time to spend a bit of on our own, focusing on our own stuff to make us even happier the reunion of our small family.
It was interesting for me, that this city is just passed its 140 years anniversary. You cannot see the same kind of buildings as in Europe. The space in the city is so big, everybody is driving their cars, the roads are forming a grid. Most of the transfer boats to the reef is leaving from here, as they call this is the Gateway to the Reef.
The heart of the city is the Esplanade, the place where everybody turns up. Many people come here to do some sport, walk or dip in to the Lagoon, which is a big open swimming pool which you can see from the landing planes as well.
But for me what was the most surprising the uncountable flying foxes. Every evening at sunset they were flying chatting through the city to hang together out on the trees.
