Milford Sound

Nagyon vártuk ezt a kirándulást! Ez itt a világ vége, nem hiszem, hogy ennél elérhetetlenebb helyre ezen az úton eljutnánk. A legközelebbi nagyváros négy és fél óra útra van, a legközelebbi kisváros, Te Anau, két órás autózás. Mi itt lakunk Te Anau-tól 20 km-re.
Reggel hét után indultunk Milford Soundba, még sötét volt, de legalább láttuk a napfelkeltét! Mesés tájakon mentünk keresztül, bár nem tudtunk mindenhol megállni, mert akkor soha nem érünk oda, azért láttunk tükör tavat, havas hegycsúcsokat, kea madarat.
Milford Sound igazából nem tengerszoros, ahogy az angol neve sugallja, hanem igazából egy hatalmas fjordvidék.
Mikor Cook kapitány felfedezte, akkor azt hitte ez egy sziget, még másodjára is annak vélte. De a fjord története messzebbre nyúlik vissza. A maorik már 1000 évvel ezelőtt bejárták. Mindent ismertek a szigeten, mert minden dombnak és pataknak is van maori neve. Az első állandó európai lakos 1878-bán költözött ide, egészen 1890-ig egydül volt, majd megnősült... Akkoriban évi pár száz ember látogatta, ma 500.000 turista jut el ide. Van reptér is!
Phill búvárkodott! Idézem, a legleglegjobb merülése volt! A táj elképesztő, vízesések mindenhol, delfineket, fókákat láttak. Illetve különleges tengeri élőlényeket, amiket általában mélyebb vizekben lehet csak megtalálni.
Én közben egy hajótúrán vettem részt. Volt napsütés és eső is, behajtottunk a vízesés alá! A fjordvidéket anno egy gleccser hozta létre, ami 2000m vastagságú lehetett. Majd elolvadt és a tenger feltöltötte. A legmélyebb részen több, mint 300m mély a víz, de átlagosan is több, mint 200m.
A világ legcsapadékosabb területei között van, éves szinten akár 7000mm csapadék is esik, ebből egy nap akár 300mm. Ez táplálja a 18.000 vízesést! Tartok tőle, hogy mindet lefotóztam! Viszont fél órával az eső után a 90%-ka a víznek elfolyik, csak két állandó vízesés van, ezek több, mint 150m magasak.
Olyan különleges ez a vidék. Biztos vagyok benne, minden nap másnak látnánk. És hogyan látták a maorik? Mintha egy hatalmas erő, kiásta volna a földből, majd elárasztotta homok legyekkel, hogy az emberek ne csodálhassák zavartalanul azt, ami isteni.

We were so excited because of this trip. I think this place is just at the end of the world, I don't think so that we can go any more remote place on this trip. The closest big town is four and a half hour drive, the closest small town, Te Anau, is two hours away. We are staying 20 km away from Te Anau.
We started our trip after 7am, it was still dark, but at least we saw the sunrise. We went through magical lands, although we were not able to stop everywhere, because we would have never reached our destination, but we saw mirror lake, snowy hilltops, kea bird.
Milford Sound is not a sound as its name would suggest, but a huge fiord.
When Capitan Cook explored, he believed it is an island, even second time he thought so. But the history of the Fiordland started back in time. The Maoris explored it a 1000 year ago. They knew everything on the island, as every hills and creeks has a Maori name. The first European permanent resident of Milford Sound moved here in 1878, he was the only person living there permanently until 1890, when he got married... In that time a few hundred people visiting the fiords per year, today 500.000 tourist reaches it. There is an airport as well.

Phill went for divining, as he told me, this was the BEST diving ever! The landscape is amazing, waterfalls everywhere, they saw dolphins and seals as well beside the unusual marine life, which you can find rather in deeper waters.

In the meantime I went for a cruise. There was sunshine and rain as well, also we went under the waterfall. The Fiordland was made by a glacier, which in that time could have been 2000m deep. But it melted and the seawater filled up the valleys. In the deepest part, the sea is more than 300m deep, but in average it is more than 200m.

It is one of the most wet area in the Earth. Yearly more than 7000mm rain falls, it is possible even daily 300mm. This is the source of the 18.000 waterfalls! I have the feeling that I have taken picture from all of them... But it is very interesting, that 30 minutes after the rain, 90% of this water is running away. That is why only two waterfall is permanent, but these are above 150m high.

It is such a special land. I am sure that you could see it different each and every day. And how the Maoris were seeing it? As a huge force would have dug it from the ground, then spread it with sandflies to distract the admiring by humans, as it is originally made by and for the gods.
