Taupo környékén - Around Taupo
Gyönyörű napsütésben érkeztünk meg a Taupo tóhoz. Ez Új-Zéland legnagyobb felszínű tava (18 km² -tel nagyobb csak a Balatonnál), egy gigantikus vulkánkitörés hozta létre valamikor 26.500 évvel ezelőtt. Ez volt az elmúlt 70.000 év legnagyobb vulkánkitörése, aztán valamikor 180 körül újra kitört, ami még jobban növelte a tó méretét. Ezt a kitörést, a rómaiak és a kínaiak is regisztrálták, mert az ég vörösbe fordult... az elmúlt 5000 év egyik legerősebb kitörése volt. Szóval egy máig aktív területről van szó, forró vízű források fakadnak, geotermikus erőművek fűtik a házakat, a földből lépten-nyomon forró gázok törnek fel.
Itt jártam Zsófiékkal 2009-ben, de egész másképp emlékeztem rá!
Ahogy megjöttünk, egy gőzhajós (na jó csak replika volt) kirándulást tettünk, hogy megcsodáljunk egy sziklába vésett maori rajzot. Csak 1980 körül készült, de az első maori flotta navigátorát ábrázolja, aki ideirányította Polinéziából őket. A házunk, ahol laktunk gyönyörű kilátással rendelkezett a tóra, minden ragyogott a visszaverődő fényben.
Másnap megálltunk a Huka vízesésnél, ami egy hatalmasan hömpölygő vízfolyam. Nyolc vízerőművet is létesítettek a folyón, ami mint már írtam igen nagy százalékát biztosítja a sziget energiaellátásának.
A Hold kráterei ma egy nagyon aktív, folyamatosan változó terület. Érdekes, hogy amikor az ember beleavatkozott a természetbe, azaz létrehozták a környéken az első geotermikus erőművet az 1950-es években, akkor vált csak aktívvá a környék.
Még szerettünk volna a tó déli részénél található vulkánoknál kicsit körülnézni, de akkora eső kaptunk, hogy csak a felhőben autóztunk. Ez volt Mordor... Azt hiszem, megérdemeltük, hogy a forró források termálvizében melegedjünk fel.
Az utolsó napunkon Aratiatia-nál kezdtünk, ahol két óránként megnyitják a gátat. 10 perc alatt megtelt a folyóvölgy alattunk. Majd a Geotermikus Csodaországba mentünk, Wai-O-Tapu-ba. Itt van minden, ami a pokolhoz teszi hasonlatossá a területet, itt található az ördög otthona és fürdője, illetve átható a záptojásszag. De a színek, azok egyszerűen mesebeliek.
A programunkat Tokoroa-ban zártuk egy tánccal. Volt gyerek csoport, aztán felnőtt, persze mindet végig táncoltam! Fura volt, hogy nem tapsoltak a táncok végén... Illetve, hogy senki sem beszélgetett a táncok között (csak én)... Remélem, ha mást nem a tapsot bevezetik ezentúl. Hiszen, ha jó volt, akkor megérdemeljük, nem?
We arrived to the Lake Taupo in superb weather. This is New Zealand's biggest surface lake (it is 11 times bigger than Loch Ness), it was made by a supervolcanic eruption sometimes 26.500 years ago. This was the world biggest eruption in the past 70.000 year. Later around 180 it exploded again, which made the lake even bigger. This was one of the most violent eruptions in the last 5000 year. It was registered by the Romans and the Chinese as well, as the sky went red... In other words this is a very active area nowadays as well, hot springs, geothermic power stations provide heating and hot water for the houses, wherever you look hot steam coming out from the ground.
I was here with my friend Zsófi and her husband in 2009, but I remembered so differently.
As we arrived we went on a steam boat excursion (okay it was just a replica) to admire the rock carving on the lake. It was made in 1980, but it shows the first Maori flotilla's navigator, who find the way here from Polynesia. In the house, where we were staying, we had a wonderful view to the lake, everything was shining in the reflected light.
Next day we stopped at the Huka Fall, which is an enormous water flow. There are eight water power stations on this river, which, as I wrote already, give a huge part of the energy production of the island.
The Craters of the Moon is a very active, continuously changing area. It is interesting, when the human disturbed the nature as setting the first geothermal power station in 1950s, this area turned to active.
We really wanted to visit the volcanos at the south of the lake, but we got such a big rain, that we were driving in the clouds. This was Mordor... I think, we deserved the warm up in the hot springs' thermal water.
Our last day we started at Aratiatia Dam, where every two hours they opening the water. In 10 minutes the valley was full with water under us. Then we went to the Geothermal Wonderland to Wai-O-Tapu. It has everything which made it similar to hell: you can find here the Devil's Home and the the Devil's Bath and everywhere you can smell rotten eggs. But the colours are like in a fairytale.
We closed our programme in Tokoroa with some dancing. There was a kids class and an adult class after, and of course I danced through both! What was really weird that they were not clapping after the dances... And no one was chatting between the dances (just me)... I hope, if they don't change anything else, but they will do the clapping in the future. Because if it was fun, then we deserve it, don't we?!
