Applecross

Végre ide is eljutottunk. Még nyáron egyik táncos barátunk, Helen Bain, ajánlotta nekünk, hogy ha igazán szeretjük a kacskaringós utakat, akkor Applecross-t vegyük fel a listánkra. Ez is nagy szerepet játszott a második szálláshelyünk kiválasztásánál, hiszen pont a farmmal szemben helyezkedett el a félsziget, a közel 625 m-es hegycsúccsal (Bealach Na Ba - ami nagyjából azt jelenti Marha terelő út), amit az tesz különlegessé, hogy ez Skócia harmadik legmagasabban vezető aszfaltozott útja, de a legmeredekebb  út Nagy-Britanniában. Amikor azt a jelzést láttuk, hogy figyelem télen ez az út nagy valószínűséggel járhatatlan, akkor picit azért meglepődtünk, milyen hirtelen is fog ez az út tengerszintről a csúcsra vezetni. Mindössze 9 km alatt, ez átlagosan közel 7%-os lejtőnek felel meg, de a legmeredekebb részeken a 20%-ot is eléri. Megint csak egysávos út volt számos egymást kikerülő lehetőséggel, hajtűkanyarok vezetettek fel a meredek hegyoldalon. Ami felfoghatatlan volt nekem, hogy rengeteg biciklista vágott neki ennek az útnak, acélból volt a vádlijuk az tuti.

A csúcs után a biciklisták kellőképp kiélvezhették Applecross faluba való lefelé száguldást. Itt tettünk egy rövid sétát a meglepően forgalmas faluban, majd elmentünk egy fotó kiállítást is megnézni, mielőtt újra nekivágtunk a kanyaroknak.

Finally we got here as well. Back in summer time one of our dancing friend, Helen Bain, suggested us if we like windy roads we should put Applecross on our list. This was one of the reason where we were looking for our second accommodation as the farm is just opposite with the peninsula, with its hill top on 2054 foot (Bealach Na Ba - which means Pass of the Cattle). What makes it special that this is the third highest tarmac road in Scotland but the steepest ascent road in the UK. When we saw a warning sign at the bottom of the hill that this road is impossible to pass in winter, we were a bit surprised how quick it rises from sea level to the peak. It is 5.5 miles, which is in average 7% ascent but where it is the steepest it reaches 20%. We were again on a single track road, where you can wait in the passing places if something is coming from the opposite direction, hairpins are leading you up on the hillside. What was unbelievable for me, that many cyclist was on the road, I am sure that their calves were from steel.

After the peak the cyclist could enjoy the ride down to Applecross village. We did a short walk here in the rather busy village and we even saw a photo exhibition in a local gallery before we started our trip back on the hairpins.
