Calum Útja - Calum's Road

Egy történetet fogok mesélni, egy emberről, Calum MacLeod-ról, aki Raasay szigetén élt egy elszigetelt kis településen Arnishban, ahol a világítótoronyban dolgozott, meg postásként, meg ki tudja még mennyi más dolgot csinált, hogy eltartsa családját. 

1967-ben miután a település kérését, hogy úttal kössék össze a sziget többi részével, elutasították, kezébe vette a dolgokat, mármint a talicskáját, csákányt, lapátot, egy útépítésről szóló könyvet és 10 év alatt, a szabadidejében, a meglévő gyalogos ösvényt kiszélesítette és előkészítette, hogy igazi út vezessen falujába. A fő célja az volt, hogy kislánya egyszerűbben hazatérhessen a Skye szigeti iskolájából a hétvégére.

Az út ugyan kevesebb, mint 3 km hosszú, de amikor ott vagy, egyszerűen elképzelhetetlen, hogyan volt egyetlen ember erre képes. Hegyről-völgyre halad az út, néhol szorosan a part mentén, melletted a meredély, de igazi út.

Phill évek óta szeretett volna ide eljutni, mert teljesen megfogta a történet. 

Ami nagyon fontos ebből, hogy nincs az a dolog, amit ne tudnál elérni, ha igazán szeretnéd. És milyen érdekes, hogy Calum utat épített, hogy autók járhassanak rajta, de neki soha nem lett jogosítványa, de mivel ez egy "magán" út volt, így engedély nélkül vezethette a terepjáróját a hátralévő életében.

I am telling you a story about a man, Calum MacLeod, who lived on the Island of Raasay in an enclosed settlement in Arnish. He was a lighthouse keeper, postman and who knows what else he did to support his family. 

In 1967 after the request of the settlement was rejected to connect them with a road to the other parts of the island, he decided to take the responsibility along with his wheelbarrow, an engineering manual, shovel and pick and in 10 years, in his spare time, widen the existing footpath and prepare it to become a real single track road to his village. His main reason to do this was to make it easier for his daughter to come home from her school from the Isle of Skye for the weekend.

The road itself is 1.75 miles, but when you are on the road it is unbelievable that one man was able to achieve this. The road is going up and down, sometimes close to the edge next to deep slopes, but it is a real road.

Phill wanted to get here for years, because he was caught by the story so much.

What is the most important for me from this story, that there is nothing that you could not reach if you really want it. And how interesting is, that Calum built a road, so cars can run on it, but he never had a driving licence. But, as it was a "private" road, he could drive his land-rover without licence for the rest of his life.
