Castle of Dunvegan

Az nem meglepő, hogy Skóciában mindenhol kastélyokba botlik az ember, de arra nem számítottam, hogy Skye-nak ezen az eldugott részén, Dunvegan-ban találjuk a Felföld leghosszabban - egy család által - lakott kastélyát. A MacLeod klán aktuális vezetője már 800 éve él itt. A kastélyt komoly védelem övezi, eredetileg víz vette körül és csak egy keskeny tengeri kapun keresztül volt megközelíthető. A kastély egyes részei és az azt körülvevő kert látogatható.

A klán egyik legfontosabb erekjéje a "Tündér-zászló" egy selyem anyag, ami a 4. századra datálható. Sok legenda kötődik hozzá, hogy hogyan került a családhoz. Ami talán a legérdekesebb volt, hogy micsoda tündér kultusz van itt Skye-on. Talán azért, mert tényleg mesébe illő a táj.

It is not a surprise that you see castles everywhere in Scotland but I didn't expect to find in this hidden corner of Skye the Dunvegan Castle, which is one the greatest Hebridean castles and the only Highland fortress to have been continuously occupied by the same family, the Clan MacLeod, for 800 years. The castle has a great protection, originally it was surrounded by water and it could be reached only through the narrow sea gate. The Chief of the clan is living here today but part of the castle and the gardens are open for visitors.

One of the most treasured possessions of the clan is the "Fairy Flag", it is a woven of silk date back to the 4th century AD. There is many versions how the flag was received by the family. But what was maybe the most interesting for me, that on Skye there is such a big fairy cult. Maybe because the landscape is like in a fairy tale.
